The 9th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency,
organized by the International
Energy Agency, kicked off today, bringing together ministers, CEOs, and
other prominent global leaders to address the urgent need for accelerated
progress on energy efficiency worldwide.
The conference, held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi,
Kenya, is a pivotal gathering as nations and organizations work towards the
global goal of doubling energy efficiency progress by 2030 - a target adopted
at COP28 last year.
During the conference, the launch of the Green Resilient Electricity System Programme in
Kenya marks a significant milestone in the country's pursuit of a
sustainable energy future. With a total investment of up to KES 36 billion (EUR
256 million), the programme aims to bolster Kenya's renewable energy sector and
transform its energy system and infrastructure to be more resilient, efficient,
and clean.
EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson discussed energy
cooperation, grid issues, geothermal potential, and greening industry,
emphasizing that energy efficiency is critical for the energy transition and
enhancing global competitiveness.
Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum
in the Republic of Kenya, and also co-host of the conference, emphasized the
crucial role of partnerships in this endeavor. Our collaboration with the IEA
is essential in strengthening our capacity for data collection, modeling, and
scenario planning across all energy sectors. Energy efficiency and conservation
are integral to Kenya's sustainable development agenda, he added.
The launch of the Green Resilient Electricity System
Programme underscores the commitment of global and local leaders to drive
sustainable progress and secure a brighter, more environmentally-conscious
future for Kenya while ensuring universal access to efficient clean cooking
solutions by 2030. For Event Details.
